MY PORTALS PROJECT grew out of photo scouting walks. It’s not unusual to find graffiti in urban areas, and I eventually became intrigued by how property owners try to cover it up. Many seem to struggle matching the original surrounding paint colors - and some don’t even bother trying. The resulting shapes often reminded me of hidden doors or passages.

My graphic overlays started as responses to these shapes. Oftentimes these paint marks seem stranded; they don’t match the structural rhythm or symmetry of the walls they’re painted on. My shapes are meant to be balancing responses to these markings or, in later works, meant to mirror the scenery.
